Among the country’s most significant art institutions, Delhi Art Gallery has built a reputation as India’s largest private repository of twentieth century Indian modern art since its inception in 1993.

Now the gallery is coming to the corridors of Mumbai. “We’ve felt the lacunae of not being present in Mumbai for some years now, and wanted a gallery that would do justice to the appreciation that Mumbaikars have for art,” says Kishore Singh, head of exhibitions and publications.

DAG Mumbai opens with an exhibition on the Progressive Artists’ Group titled Mumbai Modern.
The exhibition marks as one of the largest ones of the Progressives ever. It also celebrates the genesis of the Progressive Artists’ Group in Bombay in 1947 and their continuing link with the city.

The Progressives are among the most significant artists in India, and their work commands the highest prices at auction in the country and overseas. The group was founded by FN Souza and had as its founding members SH Raza, MF Husain, KH Ara, HA Gade and SK Bakre. Artists like VS Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta, Krishen Khanna, Akbar Padamsee, Ram Kumar, Bal Chhabda and Mohan Samant joined later.

“The reason why we chose Mumbai Modern as the title of the exhibition is to establish the artists’ link with the city, as well as to highlight the ongoing work of these artists long after the city had ceased to be Bombay and had been renamed Mumbai,” says Ashish Anand, director, DAG. “In that sense, Mumbai Modern sheds light on the current status and stature of the Progressive artists.” The date 1947-2013 gives it a definite sense of the period over which the works and careers of the artists have been tracked.

The exhibition which consists of 200 works, of which approximately 130 are on view, will be open for public viewing from October 26, 2013 till the end of the year.
