The Met Gala heist starts with some major styling epiphanies, but loses steam towards the end...

When a film’s plot centres around a Met Gala heist, you know that the visuals will be a glittery fury of couture, unapologetic shine and rock and roll. And due credit should be given to costume designer Sarah Edwards of Ocean’s 8, who succeeds at lending the stellar cast a very individual style and personality.
However, as the film moves forward, the clothes get a tad drab and the styling goes a bit helter skelter. When you have Hollywood heavyweights like Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway star alongside Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter in a project, giving them distinctive looks isn’t easy.
For the Met Gala, most of the ensembles were pretty much one-dimensional and blingy — Cate picked a Givenchy, Bullock glided in a beaded Alberta Ferretti, Rihanna sashayed in a Zac Posen, Anne embraced a Valentino (no surprises there) and Helena opted for a Dolce & Gabbana. However, the film’s overall costumes lack the sartorial impact which could have been achieved.
The Gary Ross directorial opens with Sandra walking out of the prison in a sheer and beaded number layered with a femme-fatale-ish trench coat. She has smokey eyes and contoured make-up, which is her constant look throughout the movie. Her partner-in-heist Cate looks every bit the glam rock goddess in a series of tailored pantsuits and souvenir bomber jackets teamed with leather pants. But as the plot paces forward, the style just goes kaput and most of their outfits begin to feel very forgettable.
Here are some of the looks we liked in the heist comedy...
We love Rihanna’s multi-striped chunky knit worn with an infectious nonchalance and ease.
The snakeskin print green trench on Anne brings to mind her Devil Wears Prada’s Andy Sachs avatar. The cat-eyed sunnies add to the cool finish.
Tall, statuesque and gorgeous — both Cate and Sandra wear top coats like true sartorial soignees. The leopard print top coat on the former looks like it was made for this movie and the latter’s trench is to die for.
Cate rocks a souvenir bomber jacket teamed with a pair of leather pants and shine-on booties. The cravat injects a hint of don’t-mess-with-me attitude.
Is there anything that Cate can’t pull off? She owns this velvet three-piece pantsuit like a pro that she is. The neck scarf and glam rock booties lend a subversive edge.
