When it comes to common beauty concerns, most of us look for quick, cheap solutions. But before reaching for a product in your kitchen or bathroom cabinet, it might be wise to know if they actually help or worsen the condition. Whether it's lemon juice to reduce dandruff or baby oil as a quick fix for when you run out of make-up remover, here's the lowdown on these hacks.

Toothpaste for zits

Dr Geeta Oberoi, dermatologist and skin care specialist, Skin & You says she would not recommend toothpaste for pimples. "It can dry and irritate the skin with no noticeable change in the actual pimple. Instead, one can use products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide that will treat the zit more effectively. Also the kind of toothpaste used makes a difference. Some products for such skin issues are Teen derm k spot corrector or Noreva global 6. For severe acne though, it's best to consult a dermatologist for a thorough consultation."

Cucumber slices for eyes

Dr Vinod Vij, cosmetic surgeon, Fortis Hospital feels cucumbers are one of the best remedies for dark circles. "It is said to not only lighten the skin but also soothe and cool the eyes. Thin slices of cucumber on the eyes for 10-15 minutes will work wonders. Cucumber juice can also be used to lighten dark under eye circles. Dip two cotton pads in cucumber juice and place it on the eyes for 15 minutes. Do this regularly for best results," says Dr Vij.

Lemon juice for flaky scalp

Lemon contains anti-fungal properties that can help with dandruff causing fungus. However, some suggest mixing the juice with curd or oil before applying on the scalp. Nisha Javeri, beauty and wellness expert and founder and CEO Myrah Spa says, "Lemon juice works very well for dandruff. Due to its acidity it helps keep the pH level in your body in balance hence decreasing dandruff. Dandruff can also be cured effectively with a few other hacks like apple cider vinegar and olive oil."

Baby oil to remove make-up

Dr Apratim Goel, dermatologist and laser surgeon, Cutis Skin Studio feels baby oil is a good solution. "For people with normal to dry skin, it is best to use baby oil on cotton to remove stubborn make-up. Since make-up is usually oil based it can be easily removed with oil. However, it should be avoided by those with oily and acne prone skin. When you use baby oil, it leaves a greasy film on the skin which needs to be followed with a face wash which in turn can strip the skin off its natural moisturisers leaving it dry and stretchy," she explains.
