Recently, Malaika Arora pulled off a pair of white denim micro shorts while on vacay in NYC. The yummy mummy teamed hers with a matching white off-shoulder crop top and tie-up gladiator flats. A shoulder handbag and face-framing sunnies was all she needed to wreak a multi-sensory assault. With a hot bod like that she can probably make a gunny sack look like haute couture. But the question, which has often baffled a section of women is — what’s the appropriate age to be caught in denim shorts? Internationally, the likes of Gisele Bundchen, Beyoncé, and Jennifer Aniston — all in their mid 30s and beyond — have been rocking cut-offs while running errands. We speak to actresses, stylists and designers to understand if denim cut-offs suit all age-groups?

‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it’

The common wisdom which runs in B-Town’s style spectrum is — if you’ve got it, flaunt it. Understandably so! If you’ve spent hours sculpting those enviable legs at the gym, why not complement them with a pair of itsy-bitsy denims. Mubarakan beauty Ileana D’Cruz is all for it. She says, “Malaika works hard on her body. Having said that, everyone has another perspective on the subject. Some people find it offensive. If you find it offensive, look the other way. (Laughs). To each their own.” D’Cruz adds that if she had Katrina Kaif’s legs, she’d be wearing shorts all day. “I don’t work out as hard as she does. It’s great to wear something sexy and it makes you feel so good. Look at Susan Sarandon — so beautiful. Irrespective of how old you are or how great your body is, someone’s always going to find something negative. To hell with it. Live the way you want,” the actress adds.

Confidence is key

If one’s confident and has the carriage then age is no barrier for any sartorial pick. The easy chic pin-up sensation Athiya Shetty is in love with denims cut-offs. She says, “If you are confident and if you are comfortable in your own skin, you can do whatever you want.” Athiya literally lives in shorts at home. She adds, “It’s comfortable and easy and if you have nice legs, why not show them off!”

Dress it up or down

Stylist Isha Bhansali opines that it has nothing to do with being age-appropriate at all. “I am all for this. Also, denims work well in all sizes. If you want to dress them up, wear them with heels or play down the look with a pair of sneakers, if you’re on the move,” says she. Isha is a pro denim stylist and suggests layering with the on-trend mesh. “If you have a body like Kendall Jenner or Emily Ratajkowski, then why not?” However, she cautions against overdoing it.

Inappropriate at all ages

There’s a section of style arbiters who find denim cut-offs not the most flattering sartorial pick. As much as designer Amit Aggarwal likes denim as a textile, he isn’t in favour of the cut-off trend. He says, “It’s a timeless textile that always looks young across all seasons and trends. Denim lends a sense of leisure to a garment. But cutting it so high up the thigh may be trying too hard, which denim doesn’t need to. I think the micro cut-off shorts aren’t my favourite as they fail to compliment every person wearing it. I say, it’s inappropriate at all ages.”

Don’t borrow from your daughter’s closet

Denim cut-offs are a classic style and there’s a lot one can do with it. That’s the beauty of denim — it can be ripped, faded, distressed, cut up, patched... just about anything and yet look cool. However, making it ultra micro may not be such a plausible idea. Designer Kunal Anil Tanna says, “It’s best to keep the tight and high-cut micro shorts to the tweens, teens and 20-somethings. After a certain age, it can look like you’ve borrowed it from your daughter’s wardrobe!”
