LOUIS VUITTON

Venue: Fondation Maeght in St. Paul-de-Vence  The striking modernist art gallery, in the village of Saint-Paul de Vence -- designed by Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert -- is home to work by Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque and Marc Chagall.

VIBE: '80S ECCENTRIC

Highlights: Last month, Louis Vuitton announced the renewal of Nicolas Ghesquière's contract as Artistic Director of Women's Collections and for his Cruise 19 outing hosted in the South of France, he collaborated with his friend, the stylist and former Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington, on a collection of bags drawing from the sketches she does of her precious cats and his impossibly gorgeous dog.

“My collaboration with Nicolas and his team at Louis Vuitton has been so much fun. I hope it will be a dream come true for Pumpkin, Blanket and Nicolas’ dog - it certainly is for me. It started with our love for animals, it’s where Nicolas and I really connect beyond fashion,” shared Grace Coddington.

If last season he wowed us with the 18th century frock coats and turbo trainers then this season was a playful mash-up of prints, silhouettes resulting in covetable hybrids - from the grey executive boxy and cropped jackets which were beautifully deconstructed resulting in asymmetrical lapels to the geometric prints which were clashed and colour-blocked to create a visual artisanal assault. The collection also saw an array of lingerie-inspired slip dresses and pleated maxis which were teamed with hats. Of course, trust Monsieur NG to re-imagine the motocross leather jackets and acid washed denims with his inimitable flourish - which was one of the high points of this line-up. There was a strong nod to the exuberant '80s what with a panoply of creamy tops accented with pronounced sleeves with ruffled trimmings and jogging micro shorts. The closing multi-hued, almost painterly feathery appliqued outfits injected drama to this bohemian offering.

What we loved: The season's sneaker/boots over-the-knee hybrid versions with rubber soles.

Front row:  Emma Stone, Sienna Miller, Jennifer Connelly, Ruth Negga and Laura Harrier

GUCCI

Venue: Promenade Des Alyscamps, Arles, France - a resting place for notable citizens sent to be buried in the prestigious Roman cemetery. The house of Gucci has made a donation to support the artistic heritage of Arles.

VIBE: SCI-FI MEETS HORROR

Highlights: Referencing horror films, exploring the ideas of death and after-life and often merging ancient with of-the-moment is nothing new to designer Alessandro Michele's vast and multi-layered oeuvre. Adjectives like eerie, monastic, phantasmic, sinister and wraith-like came to mind instantly when his eccentric army of widows, cardinals, rock stars and Gen Z walked almost engulfed by the circle of flickering flames. The collection had that undeniable Michele stamp all over it - from the English tweeds to granny-esque lunch suits to '70s exuberant pantsuits. There was a strong nod to his penchant for letterings - from MEMENTO MORI to the Chateau Marmont logo seen on a shoulder bags and other separates. Some outfits even featured verse by Italian poet Dante Alighieri.

Also, there was an unmistakable post Met gala 2018 undercurrent with papal insignias and cross pendants making their presence felt across the ensembles along with floral bouquets and soft toys. Not surprisingly, accessories were the real winners - from the new tote bag which featured a roaring tiger hardware inspired by a vintage Hattie Carnegie jewellery design constructed with pockets to store the Gucci Princetown slippers to the transparent Ophidia bag.

What we loved: A collared gown featuring an ornate decoration inspired by detail from an ossuary and a frock coat layered over a metallic green tracksuit.

Front row: Elton John, Salma Hayek Pinault, Saoirse Ronan, A$AP Rocky and Christian Lacroix .
