Coke cans are the most common piece of rubbish that is found strewn around parks, beaches and river and canal banks.

The next most popular of the branded packaging found strewn around were Cadbury wrappers followed by Walkers crisp packets, the Daily Express reported.

The 500 volunteers enlisted for this year’s litter count collected more than 37,000 pieces of rubbish – more than 10 times the quantity picked up in previous years, when Keep Britain Tidy search parties were smaller.

The brands next most frequently dumped were McDonald’s, Mars and Red Bull.

Completing the top 10 were Imperial Tobacco cigarette packets, Nestle chocolate wrappers, Foster’s beer cans and Pepsi tins.
