Wear the World
Rimi Nayak’s recent trips in and around India translate into her collection ‘Travel Trails’ at Lakme Fashion Week 2015. So does her impulsive style of travelling, which she tells us often makes her depend on maps. That explains the cartography element of the prints—on handloom cotton, georgette and satin—she has used for everything from saris and gowns to blouses for Jodhpuris and casual dresses. While the blue- and green-toned collection (representing the globe)—comprising jumpsuits, gowns with backs of thread-mesh maps and dresses—exudes elegance, other multicoloured outfits–including woolly-looking threadwork jackets that go well on both flair-bottom pants and gowns–have just the right amount of spunk. @PoojaBhula

From Russia with Love

Neha Agarwal’s ‘From Russia with Love’ tries to tell a tale of two cultures, in her own dramatic style. Though inspired by Russian silhouettes and motifs it features Indian fabrics and techniques. You’ll see intricate hand-embroidered appliqué on georgette, ahimsa, dupion, pure mul, tussar and pattu silks in the form-fitting styles popular in Russia in the early 1900s. Then there are pop-coloured dresses and bamboo denim jackets with cape collars featuring cross-stitch detailing and floral embroidery; circular dresses with hand block printed motifs and denim crop-tops with printed matryoshka dolls, flared jumpsuits in pure silk with a denim bodice and embroidered scalloped sleeves. All in all, a curious fusion of global patterns with ethnic fabric and techniques.

Inspired by Istanbul

Sva prides itself on its craftsmanship, vibrant colour and Indian aesthetic and while Sonam & Paras Modi believe that “there is no better masterpiece to take inspiration from than India,” a trip to Turkey in 2014 completely bowled them over and Istanbul became the muse for their latest collection ‘Istanblu’. Dramatic yet elegant, this collection strives to capture the rich architecture and heritage, the co-existence of two distinct civilizations, the cuisine, nightlife and daily oxymorons that characterise life in Istanbul.
“Everything from the motifs on the walls, the colours, the lattice-grilled windows, the beautiful flower pot tiles and the heritage jewels is what brought together our Spring Summer 2015 collection”, remarks Sonam. In tribute to the region, the palette comprises off-white, pale pink, mint, burnt orange, midnight blue and hues of gold. The spring bride can look forward to comfortable silhouettes crafted into long jackets, kotis, draped pants, mini kurtas, crop tops, lehengas and saris. Then there are Origami lounge pants that can be teamed with mini kurtas, a crop top or a floor-length jacket for an easy-to-wear yet statement-making festive look.
For the summer groom, there are unconventional colours, textures and silhouettes, classic-cut bandhgalas, kurtas and summer jackets. Then there is the Shacket—a fine lightweight shirt-cum-jacket—that works just as well for casual brunches as for formal occasions.

Royal Hyderabad

Elaborate silhouettes and techniques, subtle prints and bursts of vivacious colour, embellishments and decadent drapes...—Hyderabad-based management-expert turned designer Anushree Reddy’s new collection ‘The Royal Courtyard’, draws inspiration from the home of the Nizams. Soft peaches, light pinks and warm blush caramel tones imbue sumptuous silks, flowy georgettes and ethereal tulle replicating the extravagance and elegance of a bygone era. Zardosi, beads and crystals in an array of molten golds and antique metallic silvers add opulence to a collection that strives to strike a balance between the tradition and contemporariness. Anushree believes that, “Each design is the portrait of what a girl hopes and dreams of their wedding day. It is symbolic of her anticipation and desire to be culturally rooted
and yet hold on to her contemporary sensibilities”.
