As the runways get dizzy with happy fashion and dynamic mixes of colour and pattern, 'fun' is one little word that captures the shoe trends on 2015, Kshamata Kapoor, Trend Analyst, Clarks India tells Averil Nunes
Shoe trends that are likely to grab a few toes this year include:
Walk like a man: From the shape to the detailing, there's no denying the strong masculine influence behind these shoes. But then again, coated in a shade of baby pink, accented with grosgrain ribbon or re-cast as a slimmer, more elegant version of its macho counterpart, anything becomes more feminine don't you think? Androgyny has been around for a while, but things are moving a step further with everything from brogues and loafers to brothel creeps and slippers striking a delicate balance between the masculine and the feminine, and sometimes crossing over to the other side.
Back to Blocks: Move over stilettos, it's time for block heels to make a statement. Offering more stability at great heights that just about any other shoe design, block heels are back and how! From almost flats to tottering towers, the block heel appears to be everywhere you turn. What's more, their versatility—you can wear them to work and then proceed to a night out—makes them worth their weight. “Block-heeled T-bars go where regular court shoes fear to tread, adding an urban spin to footwear whilst providing comfort, wearability and walkability,” points out Kshamata. Do note: Blocks may be back, but they haven't edged the wedges out yet.
Retro Chic: From polka dots and florals to vintage colours, block heels and demi-wedges, it's time to take a step back into the 70s. Or so say the trend experts. With clothes that made their way down the runways offering a blast from the past, you didn't think the footwear could be far behind, did you? So whether you choose to go dotty, go bow-style knotty or start looking for the pastel hue that's just right for you, you'll find yourself in fashionable company when you go looking for shoes that will take you on a walk down memory lane.
Flat-out Gorgeous: Flat forms are expected to be all the rage this year. And as the colour vocabulary expands and the detailing rises to new levels, you can trust these well-grounded shoes to keep you in vogue, well-balanced and as close to the ground as you would like to stay. Kshamata notes, “The cool girl mismatch of nerdy sandal and chunky, high-tech sole worn for work or play—is a knockout look”.
Get Sporty: Sporty influences have been running through fashion for seasons now. There's something about clean lines and athletic detailing that works well with the wardrobes of women on the go. But the sporty look has evolved beyond trainers to styles that are sleek, super modern and classy enough to wear to a 'by invitation only' uber-luxe event. Have you found that sporty pair that you'd dare to wear to a formal dinner yet?
Colour Me: Khaki, camouflage prints with buttons, buckles and epaulettes are sure to make it big this year. Ice-cream shades and dusty-looking light pinks are also big runway favourites. Spots and florals in various hues are likely to add colour to the shoescape as brogues and flats in colours like in burgundy, black, cream and pink continue to gain popularity in the Indian market. With the wide spectrum of colour on display, it's highly likely that you'll find something to suit your mood.
Fabricating Detail: Premium leathers are likely to be widely used—both inside and outside shoes—as they feel as good as they look. Soft aniline leathers that retain the hide's natural surface with its 'grain' (i.e. visible pores, scars etc. of the animal's original skin texture) will also be popular, particularly for shoes high on detailing.
