The most important meal of the day — breakfast — no longer just comprises of regular picks like paranthas, eggs, cereal and milk. In a bid to think out of the box, restaurants are not shying away from innovating and presenting some pretty unique dishes. While the favourites still rule the roost, they are also making space for some hatke treats.

Savoury waffles v/s poha

On days when you don’t feel like entering your kitchen, you can head to Ciclo Cafe in Gurgaon that opens doors at 8 am. From the likes of Eggs Benedict, Batata poha and i to innovative dishes such as Cheddar Jalapeno Benedict Waffles you will find several options that will satiate your palate.

Parathas have made way for Sushi and Quiche

The Roseate too is giving their own spin to popular favourites like chorizo and sashimi. They make a Tofu and Beetroot Sashimi and Egg Eyes in Chorizo Cocote. It points to a shift in preferences. Something chef Anuj Wadhawan, agrees with and adds,“Delhi has always had a weak spot for paranthas and white butter but now this trend is changing as people have started opting for different dishes. There is a huge demand for Japanese food with sushi being a hot favourite. Therefore with the opening of DEL at Roseate House New Delhi we have started serving sushi as part of our breakfast menu. We also do croissants and quiches for breakfast.” Masud Samandari who is a promoter at L’Opera feels that Delhites are experimenting a lot more than before. He says, “Gone are the days when people used to opt for paranthas etc, now we have majority of them who come for a quick breakfast, choosing to have Quiches and baguette sandwiches.”

Bacon, mushrooms et al

The Suryaa Hotel is serving Mushroom Croquettes and Bacon Butty, which basically is French soft bread stuffed with strips of bacon, French fries topped with Hollandaise and Barbeque sauce.

Soy milk, sprouts, healthy picks win big

Chef Pankaj Jha believes there’s definitely a drastic shift in our meal preferences with healthy eating winning overall. He says,“Nowadays guests are very health and diet conscious. Therefore, when it comes to breakfast they want something healthy and filling. There are many takers for sprouts, fresh salads, cut fruits, fresh juice, cereals, etc. Low-calorie and low-fat milks like soya are a huge hit. Even omelettes with minimal oil / poached egg is the most preferred choice for breakfast. Apart from these, there are also those who want waffles and pancake with different toppings. These global favourites are competing with regional picks like dosa and idlis.”

So, does this mean it’s the end of the road for regional cuisine? Drop by The Gateway Resort Damdama Lake Gurgaon, and you will be convinced that regional food is here to stay. Dosas and upma still find a place on breakfast menus. Chef Sumalya Sarkar shares, “Traditional Indian breakfast foods such as poori bhaji and parantha are the most popular breakfast choices among Delhiites while cold coffee and masala chai are the preferred drinks. He says, “We’ve also noticed that a considerable number of people are slowly opting for healthy items like muesli, sprouts and vegetable juices.”

Desserts for a sugar rush

Every meal is incomplete without desserts and the best part about eating calories early in the morning is that you can aim at burning them throughout the day. Chef Anuj Wadhawan at The Roseate Hotel is experimenting with a popular favourite jalebi, serving jalebi churros for breakfast. At L’Opera you can get the Raisin Brioche, which is a French delicacy. It is a variant of the croissant that is rolled into a spiral with pastry cream filling and raisins.

All in all, it seems like there is a significant shift in what Delhites are choosing to start their morning meals with. From healthy eats to indulgent global picks to regional desi hits, there’s something for every palate.
