Thanks to millennials, birthday drinking sessions could be a thing of the past as more of them trade in a night out at a bar for a workout. Ditching the heels and the booze, Gen Y is hitting the gym with their group of buddies enrolling for a birthday boot camp instead.

RAISING A TOAST TO SUFFER-FEST

From treadmills to cardio, pilates and squats, it’s all up for grabs as part of the birthday boot camp package, giving rise to what some refer to as a ‘suffer-fest’. No, we are not talking about the morning-after hangover, but the pain that one experiences while trying to exercise. If you are wondering what’s motivating this dramatic lifestyle change then it’s an overhaul of what this generation sees as a much-needed change. Being a part of this suffer-fest gives them a chance to bond with their buddies as they fight it out at the gym to complete a fitness routine. It’s supposed to bring them closer as they try to wrap up intense and sometimes strenuous, painful workouts. Fitness experts tell us why we should consider it.

A PARTY MINUS THE HANGOVER

When one thinks of a birthday party, the mental picture that pops up is that of a group of friends raising a toast to the birthday boy or girl at a watering hole. However, while abroad there’s a shift with the younger generation choosing to hop on the health bandwagon, back home there are miles for us to go. Celebrity trainer Yasmin Karachiwala shares, “Fitness-focused bashes and party workouts are definitely in vogue globally, but the trend is yet to catch up in India. I think it’s a great way to make merry while taking care of your health and body. At some point, I would like to introduce this concept, but I feel the consumer mindset needs a little more conditioning before this becomes a trend.”

‘CELEBS CAN HELP IT GAIN MOMENTUM AS AN IDEA’

According to her, today the bulk of the population does devote 50 per cent of their time to fitness, so introducing a concept like this would take a turnaround time of close to six months for actual implementation on a large scale level. She adds, “I also feel if there is awareness created by celebrities who opt for this concept, this trend will have a far-reaching impact. Moreover, economically this concept is more viable and not harsh on the pocket. Also these parties can be quite interesting with different health food pairings to compliment the fitness themes and maybe getting a trained instructor to host the session. It’s a great way to burn calories and bond with your buddies. The best part is that you won’t get a hangover!”

BIRTHDAY BOOT CAMP NEEDS A DRASTIC LIFESTYLE CHANGE

Leena Mogre, Director LM Lifestyle management says, “One of my close friends once hosted a fitness kitty party, but that was a one-off. Currently, most people look at weight loss for health reasons acting on advice from a medical expert. Birthday boot camp is a fantastic concept and can work in certain pockets of the city where people are more fitness conscious. For it to go mainstream, there has to be a change in people’s perspective where they look at it as a lifestyle change. We already have married couples signing up to work out on special days, so it won’t be long before people warm up to this idea but it will take time for it to trickle down to the masses.”
