Ashwini Charitable Trust (ACT) is a non-governmental organisation founded in the year 2000 by Sujata Mukherjee. The NGO had a small beginning; it started with nine children from underprivileged areas of the city and aimed to empower them through education. Today, Ashwini provides for 117 students from urban slums. The organisation aims to take care of these children’s all-round development, which includes increasing their physical, mental and emotional awareness.

The children involved in Aswhini’s project are encouraged to pursue any stream of higher education that suits their strengths and native abilities. “Our children live in the slums of MV Garden, Sivan Chetty Layout and the slum areas of Austin Town. This year we have been able to take one more slum under our wing, the Doddagunta slum near Cox Town, thus impacting 25 children from 12 families,” says Mukherjee.

To raise funds to enable taking more children under its wing, Ashwini is conducting a dance drama titled Astitva, acted in by 30
children who are associated with the trust.

The play’s theme has to do with the question of identity. “The play raises questions every adolescent asks himself or herself until the forces of society push them to accept the mainstream definitions of normal ,” says Mukherjee. The play, she says, honours the spirit of being oneself.

This dance drama, apart from showcasing the talents of its children, also symbolises the organisation’s ideology. It is a venture by the trust to raise funds in order to support the education of a larger number of underprivileged children. The play has been scripted by Sujata Mukherjee and Nikhil Suares and choreographed by Maithili Dewan, Rikitha Dutta, Sneha Menon and Shudhrasimha.
