His label has always been known for astute attention to detail, an interesting usage of embroideries and leather and presenting Indian menswear with a new unique story each time. In his quest for offering something new and cutting-edge each time, he’s toyed with suits, glamourised bandhgalas and bandi jackets, reinvented Jodhpur pants with a biker edge and also ventured into  easy breezy separates with a mix and match appeal. Arjun Khanna Couture has been the go-to label for India’s lotus-eaters and completes 25 years in Indian fashion this month and it’s time to revisit some of his game-changing designs. Regalia-peppered-with-a-sporty-flourish has always been the core of Mr Khanna’s aesthetic, for instance, he dedicated one of his entire lines to the larger-than-life Russian cornucopia of culture and colour. He’s paired suit jackets with sporty, tailored shorts and also  mixed leather with crushed velvet interestingly in his separates. Perhaps the biker in him always goes back to the toughness  and masculinity associated with men’s sartorial space.

His Sundays and weekends usually go in resurrecting vintage bikes, since he’s an avid biker and loves soul-searing road trips. In fact, for many of his runway shows, he’s taken a bow on the ramp on one of his vintage beauties adding to the drama of the showcase. His artfully done-up Colaba store reflects his undying love for old world nostalgia — from aviator sunnies to timepieces to his beautiful sketches — everything narrates a story of its own.

While his clothing reflects drama and luxury, his personal style has always been utilitarian — mostly vintage denims, t-shirts and biker jackets. As his label completes 25 years in Indian fashion, here’s wishing him many more years of sartorial fantasy steeped in inimitable style, individuality and timelessness that he’s always been associated with.
