Contrary to its name Bombay duck is actually a fish that is not very attractive to look at, but makes for a tasty snack, when deep fried. And while the Bombil Fry has an iconic status that's undisputed in food circles, there are equally delicious ways of preparing this slippery fish that can be had fresh or dried. If you love bombil in its different avatars, here are a few restaurants in the city that you should drop by to have your fill.

The crispiest Bombil Fry
While many seafood restaurants in the city, prepare their own version of the Bombil Fry, seafood eatery Gajalee is the undisputed king when it comes to perfecting the recipe. The restaurant dishes out a plate of crispy Bombil Fry, every time that demands you sink your teeth in to enjoy the fish that's fried till it gets a golden hue. It goes well with the spicy green coconut chutney that's served as an accompaniment.

For a sizeable portion of fried bombil
Fatima's Goan spice is a small cosy joint located in Malad. While it's ambience is nothing to write home about, the food served is another story. Their version of the Bombil Fry may not be the crispiest one we have had, but it's definitely tasty. The best part they do not give you miserly portions and it's priced economically. Also, a must-try is the prawn chill fry here, which is finger-licking good.

If you like Bombay duck stuffed
Want the best of both worlds? Then you should try Jai Hind's Bharla Bombil. A pocket of crispy bombay duck is stuffed with prawns in a cocount-based gravy. A play on textures, this dish is a tasty variation of the bombay duck, that we recommend you try at least once.

Bombil Ambat with rice
If you are in town, make sure to drop by at Mukkam Post Malvan, and order their Bombil Ambat, a green gravy with chunks of bombay duck that can be mopped up with some rice or neer dosa. We suggest the former with a cup of sol khadi.
