A Longpi pottery workshop in the city

Mumbaikars will get a chance to try this traditional craft of Manipur

This weekend, Mumbaikars will get a chance to try their hand at Longpi pottery. The name of this traditional craft of Manipur is derived from the village of Longpi. The Thangkul Naga tribes are known to practice this art form. 

Wungshungmi Shangrei who will conducting the workshop on December 8 belongs to the tribe. He himself learnt the craft of Longpi pottery from his father. He has been associated with TRIFED - The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited, who was supplying Longpi Stone Pottery items like bowls, cooking vessels, traditional utility items for sale through Tribes India Outlet in New Delhi. 

Participants for the workshop will first get a brief introduction about this kind of pottery (history, present and future), the materials being used and their significance and benefits. Raw materials required for making one small cup and one cup (demonstrated by the artist) to do cane piping on-spot will be provided. Each participant will be given a small cup separately as well for the workshop to do cane piping on its handle and can take these home with them.

All the pottery is moulded by hand; no potter’s wheel is used. This can be used directly on fire and is microwave safe as well. The workshop will be held on Friday from 4 pm to 7 pm at Space 118, Wadi Bunder Road, Mazgaon.
