On the occasion ofInternational Day of Forests (March 21), we take a closer look at two vastlydifferent yet similar entities that are doing their bit to sustain green lungsin the crowded, polluted city of Mumbai.?

?MeetKhar-resident Anusha Babbar, who runs Under The Tree, whereby she conductsorganic gardening workshops and provides design and consultancy services topeople who are interested in landscaping their windows, small balconies, terraces, farms and even people who are interested in growing their own foodand do not know where to start.?

"Trees are my life – Imean that literally, they are the givers of life. I have tremendous respect forthem and I consider them as alive as any one of us and treat them so. Luckilyfor me, I come from a family of nature lovers and have been surrounded byplants and animals my whole life," says Babbar. "After dedicating 10 years tothe commercial horticultural arena working at my family-owned nursery, GreenGrower, I decided to take a year off and travel across the country. I workedand lived on farms in South India. When I came back, I thought that a good wayto give back to the community would be to spread awareness and the knowledgethat I had accumulated about plants and growing them to the nature-starved citypeople."?Taking baby steps? The world of plants and trees can be overwhelmingfor many of us and that is where experts like Babbar can help us with theirguidance. When quizzed about which plants do not require much looking-after andcan be planted at home, Babbar quips, "All plants need some amount of sunlight.Keeping that in mind, there are also a range of semi-shade plants that are veryrobust and can tolerate the brownest of thumbs! Starting from your common'money plant'—reason for it being so common is that people seem to find quicksuccess in growing it—to Syngoniums and varieties of Philodendrons.Spatiphyllym are also good to start with. Palms are not indoor plants, so bestnot kept indoors."?

Much like the tender roots that growup into magnificent trees, the seeds of tree conservation and plantingtechniques need to be imbued in the minds and hearts of children today. Babbarfeels optimistic about the future.
