Winter is clearly an illusion in Mumbai. However, we can indulge in a few sartorial luxuries given the nippy air. Do it as long as the fun lasts because we’ll be hitting the humidity soon. The month of Jan is all about layering, mixing different looks, refueling your closet with key fall finds and most importantly exuding confidence and style.
A double-breasted suit: If you are still looking for an excuse not to invest in one then you are missing the plot. Either opt for the two-button option or pick one with three buttons in a palette of midnight blue or steel grey. If you want to avoid looking too dressy then pair it with a t-shirt or a v-neck. Designers like Zegna and Kiton have brought the classic alive and kicking and closer home the likes of Troy Costa have reinterpreted them in their own way.
Blazer: A well-cut blazer which snuggly fits your shoulders is a great sartorial tool this fall. Wear it over a V-neck on a sunny day or a formal shirt for a night out. Complete the look with a pair of chinos in vibrant colours. Zara and Topman have some great options. A printed blazer is a great investment considering menswear is going all vibrant.
Cardigan: Some often see the classic cardigan as way too preppy. But you needn’t be preppy in the classic sense. A nifty cardigan not just protects you from the nippy cold but also serves as a great layering option while putting together a look.
Bow-tie: They have made a comeback like never before. Pick the ones in vibrant colours and patterns like nautical symbols or skull motifs.
Leather jacket: Thanks to the oppressive humidity, you couldn’t wear it all these months. However, now is the time to get this classic. Wear it with a pair of acid-washed denims as you take your speedster for a ride.
Monk strap shoes: They are not going out of the style radar anytime soon. A panoply of international brands have come out with their own take on this closet chameleon. They come in single or double buckles and in a moody palette of bottle green, oxblood and classic greys and black.
Muffler/neck scarves: Pick the ones in classic styles such as hounds tooth or plaid. Also, the way you wrap a neck scarf can also take your look to another level. Keep it neat and elegant.
Cuff links: Invest in a sterling silver beauties or the more daring skull motifs. They all beauty to the French cuffs and take your appeal to another level.
Pocket square: Break the monotony of grey or blue with a nifty pocket square. Stick to a jewel tone or paisleys.
