Shiraz Siddique, the man behind some of Shah Rukh Khan’s best onscreen looks talks about the 10 favourite outfits he’s designed for the actor

Chak De! India
Chak De was my first independent film as a costume designer with Shah Rukh Khan. The hair, the stubble and the smart casual sportswear that wasn’t perfectly coordinated all worked brilliantly. My favourite costume is the white shirt with the beige trouser. I don’t think any actor but Shah Rukh could make a simple white shirt with the most basic trouser look so outstanding.

My Name Is Khan
Another favourite is the main costume of this film — the “journey” costume.  It became one of the posters of the film. It is essentially very basic and functional, but after many discussions with Karan (Johar, director), research on the kind of clothes that autistic people wore, hours spent in many stores across Los Angeles we finally zeroed in on the black jacket, a micro checked shirt, straight non-fussy jeans, Reebok sneakers and a haversack.

Colour is very important and most of the time it’s colour that inspires me to design. The entire film had been broken down into various zones and each zone of the film was visually represented with certain colours. The love block in the film when Rizvan (SRK) and Mandira’s (Kajol) romance starts to bloom was a zone where I got the opportunity to bring on beautiful rich jewel tones  in his costumes. I had wanted his sweaters to be in interesting colours so it could be that one element that stands out. The jacket is easy yet sharp and structured. The colour of the sweater pops. The three colours (the shirt, sweater and jacket all complement each other well ) and yet the costume does not distract.

The black tuxedo worn with the black polka dot bow tie is one of my favourite costumes. The bow tie was thought to add an interesting yet quirky element in the usual clinical wardrobe of Rizvan. While we shot the scene on set in San Francisco, one of the crew members asked me, “Are polka dots in fashion... Mr Khan looks so good.”

Chennai Express
I am personally fond of denim, but very few people have the ability to carry one entire colour in one fabric — all together in one outfit. The denim shirt, the cool retro printed T-shirt and the classic blue jeans worn by SRK for a long section of the film and in the song 1234 was actually assigned for a very small scene. It looked so good on him that Rohit Shetty (director) instantly assigned it for a very long scene and song.

Pink happens to be one of my favourite colours. One hardly gets to see SRK in pink. This song gave me the opportunity to use this colour for one of his looks. He left the shirt open and teamed it with a white vest.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan
The costume, worn by SRK in the song 'Ishq Shava,' was rather basic and  simple. One would never think of such a costume for a Yash Chopra film. I don’t think I have ever put together a costume in such a short span of time. What I love the most about this is that it’s so young and boyish. I love the fit of the cargos and the structured checked shirt. The costume blends into the mood of the song, compliments the choreography and enhances the boyishness of Samar in that section of the film.

After Chak De! India, I personally consider the stubble, textured hair and the plain (black) fitted T-shirt worn with earthy cargo pants and scarves in JTHJ as one of my most favourite amongst all those I’ve designed for Shah Rukh. This look worked and how! The clothes fit very well. The stubble looked really hot and the colours complemented Khan fabulously, but what’s so special is the attitude with which he carried this look.

SRK is one of the few actors who has the ability to make a white suit look so good. Since Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, one hardly got to see Shah Rukh in all white. To design that gave me immense pleasure as it takes you back to the time when all white in movies was synonymous with romance. After all, who doesn’t want to see the king of romance in white, especially in a song in a Yash Chopra film?

There is one look from the song where SRK is on a bike with Katrina Kaif. He wears a white V-neck T-shirt and a charcoal hooded jacket with blue jeans. The look, the fabric, the detail of the off-white colour and construction of the jacket is fabulous. It’s from Dior Homme, one of my favourite menswear designers.
