A new study has found that one in ten women have been pressurized into having sex against their will.

For research purposes, participants were asked whether anyone has ever actually made them have sex against their will and 9.8 percent women said that they had been forced, the Guardian reported.

According to the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, which was carried out on 15,000 people aged 16 to 74, the section of women victims of sexual coercion is more than double the victims of rape.

Wendy Macdowall of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said that schools and institutes should address sexual coercion as it had become normalised with rape at the extreme end of the spectrum.

The findings also showed that in 15 percent of sexual coercion cases among women and men, the perpetrator was a stranger, and in 45.2 percent cases a family member or friend was responsible.
