Fathers will have the legal right to be at home for the last three months of the mother’s nine-month maternity leave. The fathers would be eligible for a government pay of £123 a week for the three months. They would then be allowed to take an additional unpaid leave for three months, which would effectively allow couples to have a total of 12 months' parental leave between them.
This would enable British mothers who earn more than their husbands to work six months after their childbirth. Fathers can avail of the leave beginning April 2011 for their babies to be born after that cut-off date.
Will this trend soon catch up in other countries as well, including India?
