Stay bright this summer

Chennai-based designer Satkrit Krishna talks about his latest collection and his experience of working for films...

Tell us all about the new summer collection that you have just worked on?
This summer, I’ve based my entire collection on ‘body lines’, which is the main design feature in each garment. Lines in different forms running across the length of the garment accentuating the natural curves of a woman’s body are the prime focus. I have also blended a certain level of folding techniques and origami into this collection. The colours are a combination of light; bright and vibrant that is just perfect for summer.

What are some of the colours that one must try this summer?
Fruity brightness — the bright red of a melon, the yellow of a lemon and the green apples. It’s cool to go fruity bright this summer!

Tell us about the experiences that you’ve had working for films. Are actors fussy when it comes to picking outfits?
I’ve worked on about seven films so far, the bulk of which were non-commercial art films. The two commercial films I’ve done costumes for had got me excellent reviews. I’ve heard of stars throwing a fit, but luckily I didn’t face those issues. I still remember it was the debut film for today’s southern sensation Tamanna Bhatia, where I got the opportunity to style her. I don’t think I’ve styled a more co-operative and sweet person than her till date. She got comfortable into everything I had designed for her and carried it off well too.
The pitfalls, however, are about stars changing shape constantly and all those minor measurement changes need to be done on the spot. The rest of the work has a lot to do with the character sketch and the situation in the story. Ultimately, it’s up to the designer to make good clothes.

Who according to you is the best dressed celebrity from the South?
I really can’t point out to one person as the best dressed celebrity, as I admire a lot of people for particular fashion traits. However, some of my favourites include, Deepika Padukone — her elegance and poise, which comes naturally after years of modelling; Vijay Mallya — for he reflects his personality in the way he dresses and Usha Uthup — for being bold enough to try out all things quirky.

What are some of the other projects that you’re working on?
Apart from my regular fashion line, I’m also working on a seasonal line of hand embroidered accessories based on stones and fabric. I am also heading design for a sports wear line called MOXI and a men’s line which is basically fashion with health benefits.
