The last Ramone

Marc Steven Bell aka Marky Ramone drummed up a storm with legendary punk rock band the Ramones for 15 years. At 65, the only surviving member of the band now tours the world with his tribute group, Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg, which performed recently at the NH7 Weekender festival in Pune.

How would you describe the sound of Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg?

Ramones' songs are too good not to be played. We play the songs live as it was when we (Ramones) were together — no breaks, no talking between songs. We do not try to be close (to the original), just play 'em tight and solid.

Your drumming style requires strength. Do you feel age bogging you down?

I do have control of my life...no alcohol, no cigarettes, I work out every day and eat healthy. I'm in good shape. When I feel I cannot do it, I wouldn't. It will be my body that will tell me when to stop.

What are your favourite (non-Ramones) songs to drum with?

I like The Beatles a lot so Ringo is one of my favourites, along with Keith Moon and John Bonham. It is hard to pick one song, every song has its own thing. From The Beatles, for example, I like the beat in Ticket to Ride.

What do you think, when you think punk rock?

Punk rock is being honest, believing in yourself and doing what you gotta do. That's all.

Any particular drummers who inspired you to do that?

Other than the ones already mentioned, Mitch Mitchell.

What are your favourite memories from the many concerts you've played at?

Every show is different, so is every country and crowd. In south America, for instance, they take the show as a soccer game, singing along and stuff. I enjoy the Latin American countries. Japan's also good. Can't wait to see the reactions from our Indian fans. It's gonna be a big party!

How do you select songs for a concert?

Pick up all the hits. After all the years, you know what songs get a better reaction in the audience.

You've said you could have roped in famous musicians for Blitzkrieg, but chose not to...

Yes, I want good musicians, not just names. I take in musicians who really love the group and know how to play the songs tight. It seems easy, but isn't. So when I find the right people, I like to keep them. It's all about the songs — doesn't matter who's in charge of playing them, as long as it is good.

Sex and drugs are in tow with Rock 'n' Roll, as per the iconic saying. You've experienced the rock scene in your 20s and now, in your 60s. Has the culture shifted?

I never took drugs. Sex, with my wife, who I've been with since high school. I had my alcohol addiction for a while and did crazy things, but got sober in the late 80s. I don't regret anything. I had a lot of fun, believe me — but those days are gone to me. I'm not here to tell anybody what to do. You live and learn.
