The Aoki effect

The world-famous DJ and music producer may have worked with a number of big names in the business, but he’s a superstar himself. His cake-throwing and champagne showers at concerts are stuff of legend. His last studio release Neon Future Experience is still high on charts worldwide. He was in Mumbai recently for the Vh1 Supersonic Arcade and has the Part II of Neon Future Experience out this year. He talks to us about roaming around Mumbai, why he won’t be throwing cakes all that much anymore  and how people will just have to bear up that he’s changed and will continue to change... 

You’ve started a love affair with India...
It’s my third time in India and if I could come here once a year that would be awesome. 

You love it that much. 
Mumbai, too. I just love exploring Mumbai. It’s like my favourite city to explore. There’s lots of culture to see. i arrived this time and didn’t even sleep, went from the airport to the hotel, they dropped me then we took off to all parts of the city that we could check out before my act.

We heard you’re going to stop the cake-throwing at your gigs.
I wanna keep the cake-throwing kind of exclusive now. More for my die-heard fans. And I know they do come to see me at most music festivals -- they’re right in the front row ready to be caked, but you don’t wanna cake other fans. So I think this change would make it more special. BT, I’ve been doing the cake throwing since 2011 and it’s time for a change.

You’ve got a lot of haters for moving from electro to big room!
But I made that move a long time ago. But I get it, any time you make any sort of change, people are not going to be happy. You can’t satisfy everyone. That’s what I learned. you’re going to always evolve as an artist. Different influences are going to come to the music and my future music is going to change as well. People will just have to get along for the ride.
