An in-store cocktail party is on the cards for the Michael Kors store in Palladium, Mumbai, on November 7, to raise a toast to its amazing performance since its soft launch in April this year. Not surprisingly, the brand's iconic satchel–Hamilton Traveler, originally designed as an alternative to the everyday tote bag, is the hottest-selling in Mumbai just as it has been worldwide.

It's been a year since the store's opening in New Delhi, what made you choose Mumbai as the second location?
Mumbai is the perfect place for glamour. The cosmopolitan energy is great, plus it's the home of Bollywood!

Describe the man and the woman you have in mind whilst designing?
When I'm thinking about the Michael Kors man and woman, I think of global jet-setters,who are constantly on the go. They live life in the fast lane, they're busy, they're travelling, they are juggling family, career and friends all at the same time. They need clothes and accessories that keep up with them, pieces that can work anywhere from New York to Mumbai and from work to the weekend. The underlying idea is that they should be able to get up and go at a moment's notice, while looking effortlessly chic along the way.

How have your designs evolved over the years?
I've always stayed true to who I am and who I believe my customers are. Chic sportswear has always been at the centre of my design ideology. While we change from season to season based on trends in shapes and patterns, the basics stay the same. We'll always have a great sweater, a tailored coat, fabulous separates and chic must-have bags and accessories because they're the building blocks of a glamorous woman's closet.

How do you feel the business of fashion has changed?
The fashion industry is constantly evolving and has become more democratic than ever, now that people have access to runway shows and designers through social media, which is great. It has made fashion much more global—now, people everywhere appreciate sportswear and glamorous accessories and so we see the same trends popping up around the world.
