I travel across centuries: Varun Bahl

Designer Varun Bahl talks about his new couture collection to be showcased today.

I travel across centuries: Varun Bahl

Tell us about the couture week collection.
We have modernised the anarkali further. This time it's not just bridal wear - couture could also be a pair of trousers with a little detail. In fact, half of my collection is in black.

Why is that so?
When I think of couture I think of the colour black. In india couture is not just bridal but modernisation of kurta and churidar to a high couture quality standards.
Saris are worn with bodysuits and the whole look is more 'today'. I think we need to move forward a little and make them more relevant. Today Indian couture is not the same.

Who is the Varun Bahl woman?
She's someone who is elegant, sophisticated, balanced with a slight streak of madness hidden or tucked away somewhere. I'd say boho chic.

How has your brand aesthetic changed over the years?
It remains pretty much the same. You come across different things in life. It's a natural change and not a conscious one. It's a different approach to everything.

Do you run out of ideas?
Creative block happens all the time. One has to push boundaries and you finally do achieve when pressure builds up. I get ideas during travels as well. Flowers, interiors of European palaces inspire me. I travel across centuries. I especially love 60s a lot.

Your fav fabric.
I like to work with heavy weight - thick crepe, tulle, twills and silks.

Your fav designers.
Marni, Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri. Every designer has something to offer. There's depth and history in everyone's work.
