Govind Nihalani

Tell us about the Marathi film you're doing.

I'm directing Ti Ani Itar which means 'She and others'. I can't disclose the theme of the film as I'm forbidden by the producer. A formal announcement would be made by him. The film is being produced by a North Indian, Rajesh Kumar, for whom this is his first film.

How well do you speak Marathi?

My Marathi is as good as Sachin Tendulkar's (laughs). Many of my technicians and staff speak in Marathi. I was part of the film script as well. Directing this film won't be an issue.

Would you be able to make another film like Tamas

I'd think twice. The resources and moral support I received then to make Tamas that is based on a sensitive subject won't be available today. Even at that time, the film was dragged to court. But the apex court, in its landmark decision, upheld the 'freedom of expression'. Tamas was shown on Doordarshan in parts without a single cut.

Where does your inspiration for film-making come from?

I have been greatly influenced by three people in my life who shaped my views towards Indian politics, history and society. They are VK Krishnamurti, Satyadev Dubey and Shyam Benegal. I was part of several wonderful discussions between Benegal, Satyadev Dubey and Vijay Tendulkar. As a cinematographer, I observed other things related to film production. That's how I evolved and ventured into filmmaking.

What are your views on mobile films and other innovative formats?

It's good that people are experimenting with various formats. I'm sure these experiments will go a long way.
