Inspired by Lakmé’s beauty theme for the season ‘Matte Reinvent’, the designer duo are ready to present an an all-women collection inculcating a strong influence of the label’s menswear. Think structured elements derived from mannish silhouettes, which empower the female form without slipping into the outlandish category. “This will be a new extension of how women will find themselves in structured clothing, which are inspired by a gender fluid drawing board,” shares Nikhil.

Since the last few seasons, the label has advocated and focused on bridging the gap between menswear and womenswear and this offering will see the evolution of that process further. “When we created the draped kurta few seasons ago, it was something the Indian man hadn’t seen it and he accepted it, which was a great indication that society is ready to build blocks to bridge that gap,” recalls Shantanu. Your SS17 collection titled Seher explored the spirit of the youth and your SS 18 outing, Tribe — the India Story echoed the voice of the millennials. What’s the runway story this time?

It’s called the Recruit based on the premise of women leading the path for the country, blurring the lines between genders, equality and opinions. We feel with the incredible multi-faceted abilities that women have and not due credit is given to them. Through design, we are able to bridge that gap therefore the colours red, black are teamed through colour blocks and silhouettes that exude a great amount of strength.

What’s been on your moodboard this time in terms of colours, textiles and silhouettes?

We’ve been storytellers ever since our brand’s inception and this time too the biggest USP is our way of storytelling. It’s about reinvention where strong masculine energies are being passed on to female silhouettes.

The finale always evokes a sense of drama. How do you attempt to complement the sartorial aesthetic with music and props?

When you think of a grand finale, you think of the setting, music, stage and clothes. We’ve got everything in place — it’s a great venue, the sound is going to be live, the stage is going to be dramatic and we’ve added a great story to it.
