The curious case of millennial sexuality

Scribbler, scribe, traveler — Chandrima Pal takes you through the sexual landscape of today

The curious case of millennial sexuality

The love life of the millennials is under quite a bit of scrutiny these days. And it has much to do with an older generation trying to make sense of what turns them on or otherwise.

Aditya Chopra, for instance, tried to woo them with a film that ended up offending them deeply. There is also the new take on a 90s' hit, Humma Humma, filmed on millennial stars Shradhha Kapoor, and Aditya Roy Kapoor, that seems to have riled every one. Audiences then might have warmed up to Manisha Koirala and a portly Arvind Swamy making out as man and wife in Mani Ratnam's Bombay, but the purportedly hot Shradhha and Aditya simulating Kamasutra positions to the remixed tune in Shaad Ali's Ok Jaanu, has left every one cold now.

If on the one hand you have tabloids and web editors going nuts over the boy-man Aryan Khan's torso, you also have them worshiping the mulled wine that is Fawad Khan. Nation's reigning heartthrob Alia Bhatt talks about breezing in and out of relationships and has fan boys and girls tapping on 'Likes.' It is also the same bunch that has been swooning over La La Land, an unabashedly old-school romance where the lead actors hardly ever kiss.

Yes, we are obsessed with the kiss. Alia plants an impulsive peck on Fawad's mouth in Kapoor and Sons and he nearly gets killed by his jealous sibling. Ranveer Singh and Vani Kapoor on the other hand may chew off each other's face and evoke none of the sensuality that comes so easily to the French.

Baffling?

The definition of what is sexy and sexuality has never been both so generous and brutal at the same time.

For instance, some find Baba Ramdev extremely attractive — especially when he picks up his sarong and kicks off a football match, while others don't like his chest hair. For most other men, facial hair and man buns are expressions of sexiness as is a more natural decotellage, unless of course you are Sunny Leone. While Anoushka Shankar, mom of two, plays the sitar and manages to look incredibly sensuous on stage, Anushka Sharma gets trolled for a lip job and hanging out with her boyfriend Virat 'Hunk' Kohli. Adele has the millennial's most sensuous voice while bestselling author Chetan Bhagat is the creator of the millennium's most controversial tweets.

Once Shah Rukh Khan stopped trying too hard to woo the millennials, he became the sexiest 50-year-old around. Elsewhere, a bunch of dishy French farmers got us thinking dirty thoughts simply by posing with very little on.

Homosexuality remains a crime though no one raised an eye-brow when the last rites of an influential public figure were performed by her female companion. And yet, someone like Karan Johar tries to make light of being trolled by hundreds of people every day for being who he is — almost out, but still not there. And oh, according to The Guardian, bisexuality is on the rise, with even Disney stars coming out of the closet. So, how can one forget a certain Goa-based socialite-impressario making a strong case for "fluid sexuality" over a lazy lunch?

Is it then, for the better, that some conundrums are left unresolved? Some loves unlabelled and relationships undefined? Perhaps.

Why bother with the truth when you can have magic?
