Mahashivratri

A day of worship and fulfilling all desires

Mahashivratri
Lord Shiva

Shivratri — the festival marks the night when Lord Shiva danced the Tandav and destroyed the enemies. He is considered to be a supreme Lord, Pramatman, Brahman and ‘the absolute’ destroyer and re-producer of life. Lord Shiva on the other hand, is believed as the most compassionate and greatest of the givers.

On this day, Om Nameh Shivaye (the Panchakshar Mantra) is sung with great fervour and devotion in praise of Lord Shiva. It is believed that one who utters hymns with folded hands in total veneration, attains salvation and is freed from all sins. He is liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Married and unmarried women observed fast and perform Shiva Puja with sincerity to appease Goddess Parvati who is also regarded as Gaura, one who bestows marital bliss and long and prosperous married life. Unmarried women also pray for a husband like Lord Shiva, who is regarded as the ideal husband.

Astrologically, Monday is believed to be the day of Lord Shiva,  that’s why people offer milk, paan, supari, chandan on Shivalingham on this specific day. It represents the planet Moon, which is moist changeable and feminine.

In the horoscope, the fourth house is ruled by Moon. It is malefic on Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius and Aquarius. The native born in this yoga is fickle, indecisive and sensuous. There are good and bad yoga which give both rise and fall in life. A malefic moon causes numerous worries from relatives. Marriage is usually unfortunate or denied. The position is not favourable for childbirth, as such it is an indication of miscarriage. If the Moon is strong, it makes the native good tempered, sensitive, imaginative and capable of fulfilling all dreams of life.

Shivratri is believed to be a day of worship for the women who face obstacles in marriage. Women suffering in marital bliss also pray for their prosperity.
