God

The term ‘God’ is construed in a zillion number of ways by a zillion number of people all over the world. Somewhere out there, at this very moment as you read this, someone is praying fervently to a tree, a wall, an idol, an animal, a star, a book, the sun, the moon or anything, what he/she believes in. As time continued to pass, people started to labelling this practice in different names such as religion, faith, etc.

You may wonder, “Why do we refer to God in different terms?” We humans, since time immemorial, have loved to label and typify everything, haven’t we? It is our need for order and decorum, which overtime, has shaped and nurtured our belief and idea of the existence of God.

God for me is the universe in its entirety, embracing the stars, the planets, the moons, and all the living forms within it. God can be found in the smile of a stranger walking by, in a chocolate cookie, in that magic penny you find inside your jeans, in the air conditioner that keeps you cool when it is calescent outside, in the earthy smell that emanates after the season’s first rainfall, and other such small wonders. I believe, it is indeed an understatement to profile God in the forms known to man. One does not need to pursue and understand the myriad religious texts and documents, which have been preserved over the centuries, to gain a basic understanding of God or to form a relationship with God.

Each one of us is born with a primal relationship with god. We are bestowed with the knowledge of acknowledging a higher power which is always at our service. All we have do is appreciate our very existence, enjoy the beauty of nature, soak and bask in the glory of one universal power that connects us all with a chain called love. It is the primordial love that connects us to other human beings, animals, and plants, manifesting itself in the form of God.

All the ancient scriptures and texts of all religions find a common ground in this quote: “We are created in the image and likeness of God.” These words are what we need to illuminate our journey on the road leading to the discovery of God. We are created to help others, love others unconditionally, care for others unconditionally and protect and nurture the world we live in. It is in the nature of all beings to love, it is indeed God, who expresses himself/herself through our ability to love. It is in the journey that we venture out to seek God, that we find ourselves.
