The film screening programmes at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum

The Museum’s active film programme includes regular public screenings of art videos, documentaries and art house movies. The monthly screening programme is curated by filmmaker and cinematographer, Avijit Mukul Kishore, and architect and urban designer, Rohan Shivkumar. Film, art and academic practitioners are invited to engage in and discuss their work.

Liberty Cinema

If you want to mix a little art history with your movies, it is the place to go. With a giant piano carved into its facade, Liberty is also considered one of the finest examples of the city’s Art Deco theatres. Rococo carvings, stunning cove lighting and a 2,000-seater auditorium makes the perfect spot for a Sunday afternoon movie.

Antique shopping

Two of the city’s best antique dealers Phillips Antiques and Mahendra Doshi have their stores in South Mumbai; Phillips in Fort and Mahendra Doshi on Walkeshwar road. But the real deal are their respective warehouses. Fortunately, for us, both are located in the Western India Steel Trading Warehousing in Wadala East. Full of fantastic pieces ranging from colonial furniture, ancient Indian artefacts and modern designs from the 20th century- it’s the perfect place to antique shop in the city.

18th century architecture in Kotachiwadi

The little heritage village of Kotachiwadi transports you back to a time before Bombay even became a city. The narrow winding lanes are flanked on either side with old Portuguese style structures reminiscent of 18th century architecture.

Non commercial art spaces

It’s worth visiting spaces like What About Art in Bandra and the Mumbai Art Room in Colaba. These spaces exhibit experimental contemporary art, design, and visual culture from around the world and provide a non-commercial platform for artists and curators.
