Mira Nair and Sooni Taraporevala are celebrating 25 years of their landmark film Salaam Bombay this month. The film was unique for Bollywood because for the first time it employed children taken off the streets of Mumbai as its actors. Documented extensively by the media both in India and globally, it went on to win many awards including the National award as well as dual honours at Cannes.
It has also been included in the New York Times Critics list of ‘The Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made’. Says scriptwriter Sooni recounting those times with wonder: “The amazing part is that we were all so naïve then. We jumped into the making of the film with wild abandon. We did unheard of things like shooting on very crowded streets in Mumbai...”
