Making a debut: Shehla Khan

Her brand may be only a year old but Shehla Khan has already had her designs worn by some of the biggest names in B-Town. The designer, who’s best friends with Sonam Kapoor, is all set to make her runway debut this month at the Lakme Fashion Week.
Talking about her show, she says, “It has been a year since my brand began and I felt I wanted to go more public. This fashion week, the only main one in Mumbai, offers a good platform for designers to exhibit their creations.”

Her collection in keeping with Spring/Summer  is centred on the Boudoir theme. “Expect sexy, sophisticated lingerie-inspired ensembles. The designs will show off the sensual side to a woman in a subtle manner. It’s mostly a Western wear line with a few lehengas with lots of lace, embroidery and skin colours,” says Shehla, who’s created classic dresses, evening gowns and cocktail dresses.

The designer admits that she hasn’t really advertised her brand, but having her creations being worn by the likes of Priyanka Chopra, Jacqueline Fernandez and Karisma Kapoor has helped increase her clientèle and exposure. “I think it has a lot to do with the quality and style. Sonam is my best friend and such a fashion icon, that everyone follows her style. But aside from my friend, she has this ethereal quality of carriage. Whether it’s a girly dress, elegant sari or skimpy shorts, she adds her personality to the garment,” explains Shehla. As for her future plans, she hopes to open more stores in India and abroad and maybe get into film styling as well.
