Move aside 'extreme cut out jeans', stranger thongs have happened

Less is more or threadbare seems to be the motto of a few high-end fashion brands of late. Yoshita Rao uncovers head-turners for those who dare to flaunt

In the world of fashion, denims seem to be undergoing a transformation in style like no other. One look at Camar denim’s ‘Extreme Cut Out Jeans’ and you know what we’re talking about.

At a time when women battled designers for decent-sized pockets to go with their pair of jeans, this particular brand gave into the demands, but seems to fall short on material elsewhere. The ‘Extreme Cut Out Jeans’ essentially just has seams and front pockets to show, at a cost of $168. People’s reaction to the nearly naked jeans were seemingly grateful chants to the brand that was gracious enough to provide sizeable pockets. Some even went as far as saying ‘Why buy jeans when you can pay full price for just the pockets and its seams?’ Yet, despite the barbs, the joke is on the trolls. The jeans were allegedly sold out a week after breaking the internet. The company’s website suggests that many made a beeline for their radical product and it now invites customers to ‘join the wait list’.

"Many young designers, choosing to make ‘anti-fashion’ statements are attracting a lot of attention. As people want to be set apart from the crowd, brands like Vetements and Balenciaga give them the space to do so," Shalini Gupta, associate professor of fashion styling and textile, Pearl Academy says about the many emerging trends. She further adds, "For young brands, it is about getting the word out. They use the oldest trick in the book – hyping something with limited supply, so the demand is high. And the many who fight to stay ahead of the fashion curve ensure that these trends catch on."

However, Carmar's jeans are not the first designs in the history of fashion to try an unabashed approach to daily couture. Here’s a look at a few other worthy mentions.

Jeaneology

Runway Thong Jeans:

Besides being a conversation starter on the skeletal approach to jeans, Yandy attempts to give birth to the conundrum: are ‘Thong Jeans’ lingerie or pants? The tattered blue jeans are similar to Carmar’s ‘extreme cut out jeans’ – a recent internet sensation. As the name suggests, the jeans have a cheekily-cut back that leave little or nothing to one’s imagination.

Lace-up jeans:

Fashion Nova’s ‘Lace-Up Jeans,’ are effectively two strips of fabric with shoelaces as the binding agent. Paying no heed to cellulite or dimpled flesh, the shoelaces taper down from one’s crotch in a criss-cross manner. Even still, the jeans can be lauded for covering one’s heinie.

Convertible Jorts:

Evolving from thong jeans are ‘Convertible Jorts’, an outcome of pop culture trends. A part of the Insta lifestyle, convertible jorts can be instantly converted into shorts as they have large open sections with detachable lower portions. Ergo the name ‘jorts’ – jeans plus shorts.

Bare Butt Jeans:

Vetements, a French fashion brand known to take many risks, had its founder Demna Gvasalia reinstate this saying, “In fashion, you need to take risks to survive.” The brand collaborated with Levi’s to launch the ‘Bare Butt Jeans’ in 2017, designed exactly how its name sounds. The brand dared to put zippers where they are not generally found – running down the backs of the legs, as well as one on the back centre seam thus leaving one’s derriere hanging out to ‘highlight the booty’.

Double Jeans:

These high-waisted jeans by designer Natasha Zinko were a sell-out on retail fashion website ShopBop. ‘Double Jeans’ has seven pockets, functional buttons and zips at each waist-band, a light blue strip that contrasts the rest of it and an intentional fold at the bottom. The pants can be unfolded to sport a ‘raw hem’ look. Listed as ‘100% cotton’, on the website, the illusion of wearing two pants may not be such a warm affair after all.

Purse-plexed

Pony purse for the grown woman:

Moschino’s 2017 runway show in Milan baffled with their line of eccentric dresses made from paper and plastic bags. Creative director, Jeremy Scott, sent a model down the runway with a toilet paper roll bag that had a golden chain for a strap. Another model strutted carrying a clutch made out of a stark white sock with a red rim and yet another flaunted a sneaker shoe fashioned to look like a bag. But these trends aren’t
reserved just for runway models. Moschino devotees can partake of a tiffin box bag (resembling a child’s lunchbox) titled ‘My Little Pony Purse’, with tiara-wearing ponies, yellow castles and rainbows, and a removable shoulder strap, so it can also be used as a clutch.

Ready-to-wear paunch – Dad bag:

The bags come in a range of skin tones and vary from hairless to hairy protruding bellies and even ones with multiple ‘spare tires’. The website, which launched in 2017, currently has ‘The Allen’ on offer.

Out of the box

T-shirt Shirt:

High fashion label Balenciaga has reinterpreted the ‘two for the price of one’ philosophy in its latest creation. The ‘T-shirt Shirt’ has ‘two wearing options’. High-low Hoodie:

Hoodies, typically worn in winter, were given a new spin by Forever 21 with the ‘High-low’ cropped ones that cover the arms and the back, while leaving the chest completely exposed to rain, shine or snow. Even though it has been sold out on the brand’s website, takers of this hoodie can find it on Shein.com.

Loud & Clear

Beyond thigh-high – Satin Boots:

A memorable instance of quirky shoe designs was when Japanese shoemaker Kyoto Ohata came out with ‘pigeon-themed high heels’ that looked shockingly similar to the real deal. However Ohata’s concept was no eye-popper when compared to Paris-based fashion label Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘Rollerblade heels’ or even Vetements’ ‘Satin Boots’. This time, Vetements teamed up with Manolo Blahnik to offer these slip-on style boots, which may not be as easy to wear. These rise above the regular thigh-high ones, beginning at the tip of the toes and going all the way up to the crotch. Along with blue, the brightly coloured boots also come in shades of orange, pink, green and black.

Price: $2,190

Clear Boots:

Go Jane and Cape Robbin definitely hit one out of the park with plastic-clad thigh-high boots sporting a perspex chunky heel. However, are the synthetic ‘Clear Boots’ with back zippers a delight to wear? Or is every outing going to be a sweaty affair?

Swimwear?

Sexy Chest One Piece:

Strutting a man’s hairy front on the beach could possibly ward off lechers or even debunk the myth of ‘a perfect summer body’. The same brand that brought you three dimensional pancake stacked tee-shirts with maple syrup running down the front and back has invented the 'Sexy Chest One Piece Swimsuit’ for women. The brand was also known for the shocked faces of President Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton emblazoned on swimsuits. When asked for a reason for inventing the hairy chested trend the brand said, “sometimes you just can't put what you want (and maybe even need) in words. And that's what's so special about this suit.”

Price: $49.95

Facekini:

Heard of ‘Facekinis’ yet? Burglars or superheroes and those who wish to conceal their identity can relate to this mask designed for beachgoers. A step further from sun protection formula, the ‘Facekini’ covers the entire head and neck leaving small slits for the eyes, nose and mouth. ‘Facekinis’ were a Chinese trend, invented in the early 2000s by Zhang Shifan, and is proof that global warming is a harsh reality that every beach bum must face.

Price: $20

Thong Bikini:

Zaful’s ‘Thong Bikini’ is a cross between a sumo wrestling uniform and the Arial font. A bandeau/strip-shaped swimming costume with flimsy pieces of cloth running all the way around the crotch and inter-gluteal cleft (colloquially the ‘butt crack’) epitomises that fashion, like all other innovations, can be weird at times.
