In the wake of recent outbreak of Zika virus in Jaipur, regular water supply will be given to the Shastri Nagar area, the place where the first and almost two dozen cases of Zika virus subjects have been reported. "This step has been taken to prevent possible mosquito breeding in the area as it has been found during the survey and screening that people are forced to store clean water for drinking and other domestic needs because water is being supplied in the area in intervals of two to three days," an official said.

"Mosquitoes responsible for the spread of Zika, including seasonal diseases like Dengue and Chikungunya, breed in clean water. Additional Chief Secretary (health) Veenu Gupta has asked principal secretary (PHED) Rajat Mishra to find a way so that water can be supplied in the area regularly and people would not be bound to store clean water. Now, the water will be supplied daily through tankers so people can refill their tanks on a daily basis," he added.

The health department teams have started penalising the errant residents to ensure cleanliness in the area. They have so far been engaged in identifying the spots conducive to breeding of mosquitoes as most of the subjects with confirmed zika positive reports have been reported from the Shastri Nagar area alone.

They are continuing to screen the area and with additional personnel from municipal corporation, anti-larva activities are being conducted in a 3-kilometer periphery of Shastri Nagar Housing Board area. During the campaign, teams are identifying potential sight for mosquito breeding and people are being fined under prevention of communicable disease act. As per health officials more than Rs 60,000 has been collected as fine money from the locals in affected area.

"Awareness is very criticial to stop the disease spread. So, awareness activities are being conducted in the area to educate people. Now messages are being communicated through hoopers also which are being used for door-to-door garbage collection," an official at Jaipur Municipal Corporation said. The swachhta jingle also being dispersed through loudspeakers at places of worship is now being changed to make people aware of the zika virus spread.
