Complementing his narrative, another speaker of the session Shelja Sen, who is a writer and adolescent psychologist, shared what goes into brewing of anxiety amongst youth. Nuggets from the session:

ARJUN NATH ON ‘WHITE’ MAGIC

The book White Magic is a journey of the agony of withdrawal from drugs and rehabilitation. But one thing which I have observed is that when I went to rehabilitation center, majority of them were a class-A drug addict but now the scenario is changing as 60-70% of the people in rehab are victims of anxiety and depression. I was as normal as others and my motivation to get high was to belong to a particular group and I use to feel safe there. I replaced my 15 desires like sex, tax and other things with one single desire. I felt pretty macho about doing drugs which is not so cool. I was waiting for something melodramatic to happen with me, but the excitement I was seeking never came my way. It takes a strong will to de-addict. I will suggest that one should stay from the source of drugs for at least 6 months to improve the mental health and detox the body.

SHELJA SEN ON TAMING ANXIETY

It is very important to understand anxiety is a universal human condition and everybody goes through it. Anxiety is increasing and there are many reasons for it- flight, fight and freeze; we are living in an uncertain environment which is triggering anxiety. We are living in a world which is full of choices and not only youth, people of every age group is having the feeling of ‘FOMO’- the fear of missing out. Gadgets too are playing an important role in creating an uncertain environment.

A huge series of disconnect is responsible for anxiety and this is a major reason why people get trapped in the cage of addiction. We can deal with this issue by dealing with disorder and person separately.
