t was a debate about democracy on a stage were politicians from the two prominent parties in the states discussed the aspirations, ethics and essence of democracy. PCC chief Sachin Pilot, chairperson for finance commission Jyoti Kiran, BJP MLA Manvendra Singh and author Pawan Verma were panelists at a session moderated by author Kota Neelima on the last day of the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF).

It was a candid Pilot who spoke of the virtues and flaws in the democratic system of the country, “ It’s perhaps true that Democracy is inefficient in many ways but if you look at any other way that the government could have functioned or governed itself we would have been far worse off,” said Pilot. At the same time, said Pilot, the only persons who can reform the (democratic) system are the politicians themselves.

Chairperson of the finance commission Jyoti Kiran stressed that the beauty of democracy was decentralization and participation of women at grassroot level in panchayats. “We need to debug the system of democracy. At the same time, we need to vary of the neo-Hindus, cozy-Hindus, and pseudo-Hindus. In the system of Democracy, we love to talk, but the perennial pessimistic narrative needs to be ended,” said Jyoti Kiran.

BJP MLA Manvendra Singh said disconnect of Indian state with the public was because the present state was an extension of the colonial state. “In today’s digital era of instant decisions and opinions, the state moves at the slow pace decided by the gora sahibs. This is cause of angst among people.” “The panchayat system is most vibrant of governments. There is more public participation in panchayat polls than even assembly and parliamentary polls. And for the common man the most important persons are the patwari and the thanedar,” added Singh as he emphasized his point.

During the session, the PCC chief showed not just his political maturity but also his wit, “Even during the session I am answering messages about the ongoing polling. No county in the world has politicians who are so wedded to the political process. But the process should be sacrosanct. Politicians need to disagree at policy and ideological level, not personal. We are opponents, not adversaries,” said Pilot. “My generation of politicians will be remembered for the amount of economic opportunities they open up for our generation and the one ahead of us,” he added.
