The magician has pulled out another rabbit out of his hat just before Lok Sabha elections.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday announced raise in the unemployment allowance to youth to Rs3,500  from March 1. Currently, an unemployed male gets Rs 650 while a female Rs 750 in the age group of 21-35 which is given under Akshat Yojana to support them financially.

“Girls will get Rs 3,500 and boys Rs 3,000 as unemployment allowance for two years,” announced Gehlot while addressing a gathering of students at inauguration of Rajasthan University president’s office in Jaipur. Gehlot said that the Congress in its election manifesto had promised to raise the unemployment allowance for the youth as per wishes of party president Rahul Gandhi.

“I had introduced Rs 600 as unemployment allowance during my last tenure. We made the promise in the manifesto that we would give Rs 3,500 to the unemployed youth. Tomorrow is first day of the month and you should start counting that all will get Rs 3,500 allowance,” he added.

Congress in its manifesto made two populist announcements - farmers’ loan waiver and allowance to unemployed youths. Within two days of forming the government, the CM waived off farmers’ loans up to Rs 2 lakh which are in the process of implementation. The youth across the state were sure that Gehlot will fulfil this promise which he did at Rajasthan University - the centre of student politics.

With two major announcements, the Gehlot government has fulfilled its commitment to youths and farmers but it may cause great burden on the exchequer.

The farmers’ loan waiver scheme is expected to result in an additional burden of Rs 18,000 crore on the state exchequer, aside to Rs 6000 crore burden put by the previous Raje government under similar scheme. For the unemployment allowance, the Gehlot government shall have to shell out thousand crores also. It may be mentioned here that the state is already under a debt of Rs 3.10 lakh crore.

“I want to thank government for raising unemployment allowance. At the same time, it should create more job opportunities for youth and also clear 2.11 lakh vacancies of government jobs,” said Upen Yadav, president of Rajasthan Berojgar Ekikrit Mahasangh.

Guidelines Issued

Ashok Gehlot government has issued the guidelines for disbursement of unemployment allowance. The youths hailing from families with annual income of less than 2 lakh rupees can apply for the scheme. According to government officials, 1 lakh youth are expected to benefit from the scheme.
