Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials on the progress in the execution of the Barmer Refinery and Petrochemical complex project. “The agenda of the meeting was to complete the refinery project within a 4-year deadline,” an official said.

The Barmer refinery project is coming up in Pachpadra after the previous Vasundhara Raje government renegotiated the terms of engagement with oil major Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to sign a new memorandum of understanding claiming it has substantially reduced the cost burden on the state exchequer compared to the “hurriedly drawn up plan” of the last Gehlot government.

Sources in the government said, that chief minister wanted the refinery to be up and running within 4 years so it starts generating employment opportunities for the locals and helps in boosting the state’s economy. According to the sources Gehlot instructed petroleum department officials and HPCL representatives to speed up civil works of this ambitious project.

HPCL managing director MK Surana, mines and petroleum minister Pramod Jain Bhaya, chief secretary DB Gupta, ACS mines petroleum Sudarshan Sethi were present in the meeting held at the CMO.

Gehlot also chaired another meeting on sand mining crisis, they added.

During the meeting, president and Managing Director of HPCL MK Surana informed the chief minister that an investment of Rs 43,129 crore would be done in the refinery which will have a capacity of nine million matric ton every year.

Prime minister Narendra Modi launched the project in Pachpadra, Barmer, along with a bevy of political heavyweights, including petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan and then chief minister Vasundhara Raje.

Gehlot had them termed it as a Re-laying of the same project which his government had already dedicated to the people.

To his charges, Modi said he was thankful to have attended the launch ceremony of the major project. He told the audience that people will now ask when a project is starting and when it will end taking a swipe at Gehlot who had announced the project towards the fag end of his tenure in 2013.

Pradhan has said the new MoU entered into by the Raje government would reduce the burden on state’s exchequer from Rs 56,000 crore to Rs 16,000 crore saving the exchequer as against the MoU signed by the Gehlot-led government.

CM Holds Neet On Bajri Issue

He also directed the officials to make a policy as soon as possible on the possibility of using M Sand as a substitute of bajri. The chief minister also directed the concerned officials to take necessary steps to control bajri mafia and stop illegal mining in the state.
