Once again there is vacancy for the post of Jaipur Mayor in less than 5 years. After the municipal elections in November 2014, Jaipur will get its third mayor as incumbent mayor Ashok Lahoti has won the assembly election from Sanganer and has been elected as the MLA.  Though Lahoti has not yet declared that he will be resign as mayor but its being taken as a foregone conclusion that he will eventually leave the mayorship and go in assembly.

Therefore, now the question arises that who will be the new mayor of the city where municipal elections will be due in a year’s time.

In November 2014, when BJP had won the maximum number of wards, it gave Nirmal Nahata the post. Lahoti had also contested the election and had been elected as councillor and was being touted as mayor. However, Nahata was made the mayor. But it seems destiny had plans for him and after Nahata resigned in 2016, Lahoti became the mayor in mid of the tenure. Now, even before the completion of the remaining tenure of the board, the search is on for a new mayor. Lahoti had earlier in 2008 fought assembly election on BJP ticket from Civil Lines but had to face defeat. In 2013 assembly elections, he was not given the ticket and instead Arun Chaturvedi was given ticket from Civil Lines and he went on to become cabinet minister in the government. Lahoti, thereafter in 2014, contested the local bodies election.

Sources inform that there are many councillors who are willing to step into the shoes of Lahoti and once the new government is formed and BJP also elects leader of its legislative party and the things settle down, the attention of BJP will divert to elect the new mayor for Jaipur.
