The Goods & Service Tax (GST) may be creating problems for many businesses but paan masala and gutkha traders are making a kill in a local market.

A team of DNA reporters did a sting operation in Dinanath ji ki Gali near Choti Chaupar and found that paan masala and gutkha traders have been doing brisk business, while  products are sold without purchase bills here.

Also wholesale traders of other products like dry fruits, soap, oil etc. do not trade in number one. You get prices comparatively low from other wholesale markets but the catch is that you do not get bill for the purchase.

Whether it was sales tax, VAT or now the GST, the business dealings in Dinanath ji ki Gali has not changed. However, tax officials are going soft on them. People with knowhow of trade here claimed that not just Jaipur but retailers in other districts also get supply from this market. Every day one can see hundreds of salespersons carrying away huge chunk of zarda, gutkha and paan masala.

When the DNA team asked, people said that GST has nothing to do with it rather this market has been functioning like this. It does not have a system of formal trade. While, those buying goods from here think they have got a fair deal and saved money by not having to pay the tax on their purchase, the fact is the seller charges tax. “The trader doesn’t let go tax component. He charges it but the buyer doesn’t get to know. The buyer doesn’t get to know how much was the price of the product and how much was the tax,” said a person.

When DNA team reached a wholesale firm Rajesh Brothers as a customer and asked him Zafari zarda, Silbag, Tansen and Amber paan masala; the salesman in the shop said only Amber was available. He provided five packets of Amber but none of them had batch number, on inquiry the distributor blamed it on the company. When the team asked for bill, the distributor was taken aback. He made several excuses but relented after constant pressure.
