It seems, Rajasthan isn’t the ideal place for tigers. With two big cats dying unnatural deaths in two days in Sariska and Ranthambhore and one tigress missing in Sariska, the incidents point out the abysmal state of affairs of the forest department.

After a tense night when ST-11’s body was found in Bhartrihari area of Sariska, a postmortem was conducted in the DFO office at the Sariska headquarters in the presence of a medical board, senior forest officers, Tehsildar and police officials.

Representatives from the Wildlife Institute of India were also present. “The tiger’s viscera was taken and has been sent for further investigation. The four-year-old tiger was born in Sariska and weighed 195 kgs. Meanwhile, a case against farmer Bhagwan Sahay has been registered and it appears that it is not the first time he has put a snare to trap big cats. However, until the investigation is completed, nothing can be said for certain,” officials said.

Meanwhile, at Ranthambhore, tiger T-28 moved to the periphery areas of the park and came in direct contact with humans in the villages.

“The tiger was near Chhan village and early in the morning some men saw the feline. However, people ventured too close to the animal and in a fit of rage, the tiger attacked the group members and injured two men, who were rushed to hospital.

Realising that the situation could escalate, forest officials decided to tranquilise the beast and remove it to a safer area. However, this led to the tiger’s death. There are several reasons behind the feline’s death. The tiger was over 10 years of age. There is also a possibility that the feline may have died of tranquiliser overdose or due to any reaction from it. However, that is a far-fetched but all angles will be investigated,” officials said.
