More than two decades have passed since Babri mosque demolition. The temple is yet to be built on the disputed site. The matter is still pending in Supreme Court. However, whenever elections approach, Hindu organisations get active.

With by-elections due in Alwar, Ajmer and Mandalgarh, VHP, the militant arm of RSS has begun door-to-door campaigning to foster oath in the name of Lord Ram.

After benefiting from Ram Temple movement initially, the BJP, which is political face of the sangh, believes that in the presently charged atmosphere in which majority sentiments are on upswing, the Ram temple issue can boost its electoral chances once again particularly in the upcoming by-elections.

Although Ram Temple is in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, it has impacted politics in other states in Hindi belt. Hence, it is not surprising that amid talk of an out-of-court settlement, the sangh parivar has begun campaign of Ram naam jaap Sankalp.

The VHP claims that it has nothing to do with elections but how is it possible to keep the matter from being raised during election campaign. BJP leaders of RSS background like Omkar Singh Lakhawat and Gyandev Ahuja have been continuously giving statements in support of Ram Temple. BJP’s national general secretary, Rajya Sabha MP Bhupendra Yadav who has roots in Ajmer is, in fact linked to the Ram temple court cases on behalf of RSS.

However, the Congress alleged that the BJP always use Ram’s name for election gains but forgets once the elections are over.

The VHP is once again following the strategy of its former head Ashok Singhal when the Ram temple movement spread across the country and VHP members garnered support through door-to-door campaign and thousands of kar sevaks had reached Ayodhya. Similarly, in the present vicious atmosphere over alleged cow smuggling and slaughter, the latest movement by the VHP can polarise voters in Alwar as well as in Ajmer, which has been in focus because of religious conversion and trishul diksha.

If the formula of polarising voters on communal lines works, the BJP can fancy its chances while the Congress will have to find an answer to communal polarisation.
