A number of Sahariya families are forced to migrate from villages of Shahbad block in Baran district of Rajasthan due to unemployment and poverty. In a recent mass migration, more than 50 Sahariya families from Ranipura village of Kasba Norera Panchayat in Shahbad block, 28 km away from sub-district headquarter Shahbad, moved to neighbouring districts, leaving their houses abandoned. Allegations are that the panchayat here is showing discriminating attitude towards Sahariyas while allotting employment under MGNREGA, thus forcing them to quit their place.

“35 families left their houses and moved to Rawatbhata in Chittorgarh district on May 5,” said Malam Sahariya, a local resident of Ranipura village. “They were forced to migrate as there is no work, even the panchayat failed to provide jobs under MGNREGA. A few families, that were left behind also moved the next day. These people had left the village earlier in March also but returned a month ago with the hope that they would now get jobs in their on area. But after a month of joblessness they were forced to quit again,” he added.

The major reason of mass migration of Sahariya families is that there is no MGNREGA work for them going on in the area to give them employment. The ‘no job’ situation is same in Bhoyal, Pathari, Sandri villages as well. There are also allegations on panchayat of discriminating with Sahariyas while providing jobs under MGNREGA.

“Sahariyas are being neglected by the panchayat, even if there is little work under MGNREGA,” Badri Sahariya of Bhoyal said. “Recently, from May 1, new work has started here, but no one from Sahariya community has been provide a job. You can see that people from other communities are registered on muster roll,” he added. Suggesting a solution, Amarlal, a villager of Sandari said, “People have dug a well here in the village. Panchayat can start the work to increase the depth of the well. It will not only give job opportunity to Sahariyas but also provide a solution to drinking water problem in the village.”

Raju Khangar, sarpanch of Kasba Norera said that to provide employment to Sahariyas of Ranipura village, he had sent a proposal to construct a gravel road in the village. “Nod for the proposal is still awaited. Yes, we are facing problem in providing employment to Sahariyas but as soon as proposal is granted, they will get job,” said Khangar.
