Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the oldest and most common forms of arthritis. It causes the cartilage, normally found in joints, to break down. As per city-based experts, Total Knee Replacement (TKR), has emerged as a safe and effective treatment for severe OA of the knee as it has benefited millions of patients worldwide and it can be counted among the most successful procedures available today.

“With change in lifestyle, increased disposable income and enhanced outcomes expectations from the patients, it has now become possible to diagnose arthritis at a much earlier stage. Hence for patients who come with early stage of the disease, a less-invasive surgical alternative may be thoroughly weighed before going for total knee arthroplasty,’ Dr Rajeev Bhargava, Head of Department, Orthopaedics at EHCC Hospital said.

In case of OA, the cartilage breakdown removes the buffer between bones and the resulting bone-against-bone friction causing pain and eventual loss of movement.

“Unicompartmental knee replacement is a revolution in knee joint surgery for early stage of osteoarthritis. This surgery is indicated in cases where OA involves only one of the three compartments of the knee,” Dr Rajeev said.

“The surgery allows the patient to retain more than 70 percent of their original joint surface and ligaments and hence the patient gets a very ‘natural knee’ like feeling while allowing them unrestricted movements and activities. This also provides them with an experience that might be very satisfactory,” he added.

As per experts, owing to its irreversible nature, the surgery is recommended only in patients for whom other treatment modalities have failed.

Since this procedure involves implanting smaller implants, the surgery is performed using minimally invasive techniques. Other benefits include earlier mobilization, less pain and reduced length of hospital stay.

“A successful Uni Knee replacement may delay, and in some cases, prevent a more extensive knee replacement surgery. It is an innovative treatment option available today, however, the indications for this can be very specific and a thorough evaluation needs to be done before choosing to do the same,” said Dr Rajeev.
