The months of May and June are trying for farmers and tricky for government in Rajasthan. These are times when farmers face the challenge of selling their crops and preparing for the next crop; times when tempers run high and patience runs low.

Even as Rajasthan government is yet to meet the provisions of agreement made to farmers, Tonk farmers have announced a protest rally on June 13 - the anniversary of Sohela firing incident of 2005. Five persons, including a pregnant woman, were been killed when police opened fire on the protesting farmers then.

The farmers are demanding water from Bisalpur Dam for drinking and dedicated share of water for crops. They are also demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report and speedy waiver of loans.

Leading the agitation is man from RSS stables Rampal Jat, national president Kisan Mahapanchayat. “We demand a Kisan Raj in the state. We want that buying crops below support price should be declared illegal. People and villages displaced by the Isarda Dam should be adequately rehabilitated,” said Jat.

Extending support to farmers is the Rail Lao Sangharsh Samiti, that is demanding train connectivity for Tonk district. “We extend support to the farmers as we feel that our cause is towards the same purpose. Train connectivity will benefit the farmers as their produce will have the scope of a larger market,” said Akbar Khan, convenor of the agitation.

While Tonk is home to the Bisalpur Dam, water has been a sore issue with the farmers of this district. Drinking water is supplied to Jaipur and Ajmer from Bisalpur dam, and this has been a cause of angst for the farmers of Tonk.
