The state police are troubled with one major issue of fitness. Its cops are not one of the fittest and various issues like overweight, low endurance and similar problems that hamper policing are being experienced by the cops.

While recently, the top brass of the state police force undertook the fit India challenge propagated by sports and youth affairs minister Rajyavardhan Rathore and supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the officials at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) have realised that there is a dearth of fitness activities and thus an effort has been made by the PHQ to better the fitness levels of the force. For the purpose, open-air gyms are being established and various phases where not only cops but even local public can come and workout without paying anything.

While a full-fledged gym is established at the PHQ, the cops have realised that fitness is one of the main criteria for recruitment in the force, however after sometime, the same becomes redundant.

“The idea came forward that open-air gyms should be established for the police staff. However, it will be done in a phased manner. In the first phase, we have sanctioned open-air gyms to be installed at training academies,” said Bhupendra Dak, Additional Director General (ADG) – Planning, Modernization, and Welfare.

As a result, the PHQ has decided to start the gyms at five venues namely Rajasthan Police Academy at Jaipur, RPTC at Jodhpur and Police Training School at Kishangarh, Bikaner, and Kherwara. The gyms would be established at a cost of over Rs47 lakh which was recently sanctioned by the home department in a meeting held on July 18.

According to officials, after the first phase, the PHQ will look into the second phase wherein such gyms would be opened on a district level, however, it will take some time before the idea is realised. “We are keen to better our force’s fitness level and we will look into the second phase once the first phase has completed,” a highly placed official said, requesting anonymity.
