The elections for the students’ union polls in Rajasthan would be held in two phases. The student union polls throughout Rajasthan, including the ones that would elect the Rajasthan University Students’ Union (RUSU) panel would be held on August 31. The state government declared the schedule of the student’s union elections-2018 on Monday.

In Jodhpur division, however, the students’ union elections would be conducted on September 10. “The decision to hold the elections in Jodhpur division later was taken because the Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra would be underway in the region around then,” an official said. The gurav yatra is a massive outreach programme by the state government to outline the work done in its tenure so far ahead of the assembly elections due later this year.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra will be held from August 24 to September 2 in Jodhpur division. To avert a law and order situation, the decision to conduct the polls in Jodhpur in the second phase was taken. Counting of votes for all university and college students’ union elections across the state will be held on September 11, in one go.

Over the last two weeks, there prevailed a situation of skepticism regarding the students’ union elections in the state. NSUI had performed a sit-in at the University of Rajasthan last week for the declaration of the election dates. The higher education department, on Monday, released the programme for the student’s union elections.

Higher education minister Kiran Maheshwari said that the department has instructed the administration of universities and colleges to comply with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee during the student body elections. The department said that the student union elections should be done in accordance with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee. The process of the first phase will starts on the August 23, under the student union election programme.
