Giving back to his alma mater, a student from government school in Jhunjhunu has sponsored a ten day foreign trip for the principal and his wife. All staff members would also get a three day trip to select locations in India. Cash awards have been given to students who performed well in board exams. The trips have been sponsored by a former student of the school Kamal Poddar who has made it big in the field of finance. He is now settled in Mumbai and is the managing director of a thriving firm Choice International Limited.

It all started when Kamlesh Taterwal joined the Seth Durgadutt Jatiya Government Higher Secondary School at Bissau in Jhunjhunu as principal in 2004. The school was in a run rown condition and had a very low student strength. Taterwal was earlier a teacher in the school in 1994 to 97.

To improve the condition of the school, he formed a whatsapp group and connected to old students seeking financial help to improve the infrastructure and facilities at the school.  Incidentally, Kamal Poddar was also his student. He contacted Poddar and asked him to contribute some amount for the whitewash and paint of the sprawling school building. Poddar offered to pay the entire amount. The association developed over time and Poddar also kept in touch. On a visit to the school, he announced incentives for all the teachers who would give results above seventy five per cent. He also announced cash prizes in various amounts for students scoring above seventy five per cent marks to above ninety five per cent marks.

Enthused by the offer, the teachers and students got going with a vengeance and all faculties in class 10 and 12 scored a cent per cent result in session 2016-17. A feat the school had performed after 40 years. Total 19 students were eligible for cash prizes. Their only regret was none could get above ninety five percent and win cash award of Rs51,000.

So enthused was Poddar that he came down to the school and a function was organised to celebrate the result. He made an on the spot announcement that not just teachers of board classes, but every member of the school staff would get an all expense trip to either Mumbai, Goa or Manali. The concept of guru dakshina is a part of the ancient Indian education system, in its modern avtaar, Monday will see Taterwal leave for a ten day trip to Dubai with his wife Rajshree who is also a senior teacher.

AN EXAMPLE

  • The Rajasthan government is handing over schools on PPP mode. But the Seth Durgadutt Jatiya Government Higher Secondary (SDJGHS) School of Jhunjhunu is a shining example of what the staff of government schools can achieve. That too without handing over reins of the schools to private partners.
