The real test of Pink City’s heritage begins

The Team: Will take the heritage and architecture of the city on record

A team of UNESCO’s International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMS) reached Jaipur on Saturday to physically inspect and report on the heritage value of Pink City, Jaipur. The team, during their three-day visit. will take on record the heritage architecture and monuments of the city and their conservation status to evaluate upon the city’s claim to list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Accompanied by officials from Archaeological Survey of India, representatives of the committee met chief secretary to the government of Rajasthan, DB Gupta at the secretariat. Here they were briefed upon the efforts being made by the state government for conservation and restoration of heritage at Jaipur. After the meet, the team visited several monuments and residential areas of the city. The team is scheduled to visit 41 monuments and heritage areas of the city during their three-day tour. 

Jaipur has two of its sites, the Amber Fort and Jantar Mantar on the list of World Heritage Sites and is now pitching to get the entire old city being declared as one of the sites. Established nearly three centuries ago, the city has evolved with time and added several architectural marvels on its map over the period. However, the recent developments pose a concern for heritage. “The experts will take in consideration that the heritage has not been destroyed in process of modernization and planning of the city,” said a senior official at Jaipur municipal corporation. 

A tag of World Heritage Site adds to the value of city in global tourism map, drawing in business along with pride for the residents. The state government and civic authorities have made elaborated efforts to improve upon the Pink City’s appearance in anticipation of inspection. 

However, it will only be possible if the team holds that the present generations have conserved upon the rich legacy satisfactorily. 

On its first day, the ICOMS representatives visited City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Tripolia Bazar, Brahmpuri and several other parts of the Walled City.

Even as they noted in detail about the architecture and its upkeep, the findings would only be revealed after evaluation by the World Heritage Community.
