Take your pick: Tomato prices at par with the king of fruits

The rates of tomato have increased to Rs 60-80 per kg in the city’s vegetable markets. The rates have increased so much that they are now at par with the rates of several varieties of mangoes too.

Till June end the rate of tomato was about Rs 20-30 per kg but as soon as July started the rates increased by four times.

The vegetable vendors claim that it is because of the rainy season that the supply of other vegetables have reduced. Therefore, the demand of tomato have increased and rates have gone up.

President of Jaipur fruits and vegetable wholesale market Rahul Tanwar while speaking to DNA said that there is less arrival of vegetable trucks which is causing the price to rise.

“In mandis on an average 500-600 trucks used to come carrying vegetables but the number has reduced to 300-400,” said Tanwar.

In the month of April and May, the same tomato was coming at Rs10 per kg and gradually increased to Rs30 per kg towards June.

A tomato is an integral part of cooking and used as salad too, the increased prices have thrown the consumers’ budget off balance.

“Many people just turned away after hearing the rate of tomato, though I am sure they will ultimately buy it as its necessary item of cooking,” said a vendor at Maharani Farm area. The people are comparing the rate of tomato with the favourite fruit mango which is considered to be costly in the state.

THROWS BUDGET OFF BALANCE
